Iran Authorities has executed the first prisoner known to be convicted for an alleged crime stemming from ongoing nationwide protests.

According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, the execution of Mohsen Shakari came after he was accused of blocking the road and attacking a member of the security forces with a knife in Tehran.

Tasnim added that the Supreme Court had rejected the appeal made by the defendant and justified the sentence by saying the defendant’s actions represented a “crime of waging war against God”.

Activists have warned that others may also be executed soon, because prosecutors in the country say that at least 7 people have been sentenced to death so far because of their participation in the demonstrations.

Protests have erupted in Iran since the killing of Mahsa Amini, 22, on September 16, after she was detained by the Iranian morality police.
