Mother Cleidiane Santos dos Santos, 27, gave birth to her son Angerson by caesarean section on Wednesday, January 18, at the Padre Colombo Hospital in Parintins, Amazonas state.

Ms. Santos was in the hospital for a routine consultation, but the doctors realized that the unborn baby was too big for her to carry for a full period.

Angerson, who is being kept in an incubator in a ‘stable’ condition, is believed to be the largest baby born in Amazonas state at 59cm long.

Both mother and child are said to be in good health.

The boy sets a new state record, last held in 2011 by a boy who weighs 13 pounds and is 1.8 feet tall.

Angerson narrowly misses the national record set by Ademilton dos Santos, born in 2005 and weighing 17 pounds (8 kg).

Ademilton was also born by caesarean section in Salvador, in northeastern Brazil.
