A suspected Turkish airstrike targeted a civilian car in Duhok’s Chamanke district on Sunday, killing one of the civilians onboard and wounding another.

The strike occurred at around 5:00pm, killing Alan Ismael, 24, and wounding Hashim Shakir, 49, according to Gav’s reporter on the ground.

The two men were visiting a family farmhouse near the area when the strike happened, according to Ibrahim Mohammed, Ismael’s uncle.

“We are constantly bombarded and no one asks why. The government does not even tell us that this is a restricted area and that we should not visit it. A lot of people go there for picnics, tending to their properties, or just visiting their home village,” Mohammed told Gav’s Dlovan Hassan.

Mohammed said that the constant bombardment has worried the residents of the area, and called on relevant authorities to find a solution for the issue.

Media affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) blamed Turkey for the attack, and claimed that Shakir was in critical condition.

Clashes between the Turkish army and the PKK have intensified over the past few weeks in the northern mountains of the Kurdistan Region. Chamanke is located 15 kilometres from Mount Gara, known for frequent clashes between Turkey and the PKK.

The PKK is an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara. The Turkish state has been at war with the armed group for several decades. The conflict regularly spills over into the Kurdistan Region where the PKK has its headquarters in the Qandil Mountains.
